約翰衛斯理 – A Grade 5 Student Project Presentation

My name is John Wesley. I was born in 1703 and I was the 15th child of the family. There are 19 children in my family. My father, Samuel Wesley is an Anglican pastor in Epworth, a small town in Lincolnshire in England for 40 years. My mother, Susanna is a very devoted Christian and teaches strictly at home.

When I was six years old, our home was on fire and I was saved miraculously. My mother thought that I am “a branch taken out from the fire”. I left home at 10 years old and studied in the Charthouse in London. I went to the Christ Church College in Oxford for study at 17. I finished my Master degree at the Lincoln college at 23 where I became a lecture and an Anglican decon. I became an Anglican Church pastor when I was 26.

When I was studying in Oxford, together with my brother, Charles Wesley, George Whitfield and some other Christians, we organized the ‘Holy Club’ which later known as ‘the methodist’ because of our tough discipline. We held regular bible study and prayer meetings, and visits to the poor and prisoners. We also translated many theological and spiritual readings from Latin and Greek to simple English.

I started the open-air sermons to every corner of the society, especially among the poor and the miners in 1739. I and a group of my followers formed the first Methodist society in London, England the same year. I led the "Methodist movement" into the 18th century's most influential religious revival in Europe (that is, today's Methodist Church). During my life, I traveled about 250,000 miles and preached about 40,000 times until I died at the age of 88.

Charles Wesley, my younger brother, is a clergyman and hymnist. We had different opinions on certain doctrinal matters. Charles strongly opposed steps that might lead to separation from the Church of England and therefore disapproved of my ordinations. Charles Wesley is often called the poet of the Methodist movement. He composed almost 7000 hymns for praise and worship. Some widely known hymns are “Jesus, Lover of My Soul” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”.

The main belief’s and theology of the Methodist is that salvation is available for everyone through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Methodist affirms the traditional Christian belief in the Holy TrinityL Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They also believe that the living core of the Christian faith was revealed in Scripture; and the Bible was the sole foundational source of theological or doctrinal development. Methodists believe that a sacrament is a "visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace" instituted by Jesus Christ. There are two sacraments observed by Methodists: Baptism and The Lord's Supper.

The "Methodist movement" I led became the most influential religious revival in Europe in the 18th Century and it also contributed to a big social revolution to the community.
