In some Bible versions, Matthew 16:26 describes a person's soul and in others it describes the life. Can someone shed some light in the context of the original Bible that was written in Greece?

Matthew 16:26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

Matthew 16:26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life?

Breath is usually associated with Spirit or soul, as the Breathe of God is usually the Spirit of God.
In this case it could literally mean both things, life and soul. What good does it do a man to gain the whole world if he loses his life or health (short term) and more-so, what good does it do a man to gain the world but lose his eternal place with God, his soul.
I do think the more accurate translation would be soul or spirit.
